Phaos Technology has developed a toolkit for developing Java
applications and applets to access digital certificates directly from
a browser's certificate store. The Browser Scout is an ActiveX
control that exposes a Java API accessible from within a browser's
VM. Applets using Browser Scout can list the certificates in the
browser's certificate store, export a selected certificate, and use
the private key.
ILOG's CPLEX 7.5 optimization software engine includes a Java
programming interface. Targeted toward web applications that must
perform complex decision making tasks, the new release contains Java
objects for variables, constraints, and models and is intended to
allow mathematical programming and constraint programming to be used
in hybrid solutions. Users can customize the CPLEX solving algorithms
for special problems, and can link new Java routines to the CPLEX
engine.
Compuware has released OptimalJ, a development environment for J2EE
applications. OptimalJ supplies wizards, utilities, and patterns to
aid developers, along with a Domain Model Editor and a Business Rules
Editor. A source editor, class browser, form editor, and debugger are
also included. Existing classes not generated by OptimalJ can be
imported and called by the application; the source editor identifies
managed source code, business rule code, and custom source code
separately. Code is kept actively synchronized with the application
models. OptimalJ also includes an open-source test environment with a
web server and EJB container.
InstallShield Developer 7.02 supports installation requirements of
.NET applications. The release provides Visual Basic .NET and Visual
C# .NET project wizards, Visual Studio .NET add-ins, enhanced file
dependency scanning for both .NET assemblies and Win32 components,
support for .NET custom actions in assemblies containing installer
classes, .NET assembly configuration and management capabilities, and
a streamlined distribution of the .NET framework runtime. Developer
7.02 also offers a visual dialog editor, a patch creation wizard,
source-code control integration, an automation layer to
programmatically modify installation projects, a Windows Installer
2.0 table editor, and debugging tools.
General Magic is shipping its magicTalk Enterprise Platform 1.0, a
suite of J2EE- and VoiceXML-based software designed to facilitate the
development of automated telephone applications. The platform
includes a graphical development tool based on extensions to
Macromedia's Dreamweaver UltraDev product; reusable, extensible Java
dialog components; a central repository for storing and retrieving
voice assets, which ships with more than 6000 prerecorded prompts,
grammars, and scripts; a VoiceXML debugger; and a virtual telephony
client which uses a headset PC microphone and speakers for testing
scripts in a desktop environment. Voice applications developed using
the magicTalk platform can be deployed on IBM WebSphere, BEA
Weblogic, or Jboss/Tomcat servers.
VistaPortal Software has announced viSTAR Library, a collection of
fully tested, platform-independent, object-oriented Java classes that
facilitate development of applications based on the StarOffice API
from Sun Microsystems. It lets you build comprehensive and customized
software applications that integrate many of the spreadsheet and
charting features found in StarOffice, StarCalc, and StarChart from
Sun Microsystems. Also available from VistaPortal Software is Vista
JDBC, software drivers that enable Java applications to
programmatically access data contained in Microsoft Excel and
StarOffice 6.0 StarCalc spreadsheets.
Rational Software has announced the release of Rational Suite 2002, which
includes Rational ProjectConsole, enhancements to the Rational Developer
Network SM, and improvements to the software configuration management
tool, Rational ClearCase. Rational ProjectConsole is a web-based tool
that automatically gathers key metrics about a software project and dynamically
generates a project web site. The Rational Developer Network now includes
new knowledge centers; new exchanges for the Rational Unified Process
and Development Accelerators; and additional training courses. The improvements
to ClearCase include support for IBM zSeries Mainframes; support of Windows
Terminal Server and Windows XP; and new integrations with the Sun Forte
for C++ IDE and automated deployment for IBM WebSphere. Rational Software

NXN Software has released NXN alienbrain 5.0, with advanced project tracking
and asset management facilities, 35 additional productivity features,
scalability to 100+ users, and clients for Macintosh and Linux. Features
include: high-speed thumbnails and visual navigation through file and
folder coloring; advanced searches; and the ability to send instant messages
from within alienbrain that can include file links for access to the data
in question. NXN also introduces FX100 server, which can handle several
terabytes of data and can accommodate over 100 simultaneous users.

32-bit protected mode, 24-bit extended address mode, and 20-bit real mode
x86 embedded systems development. Paradigm C++ combines many tools into
one comprehensive environment, allowing toggling between windows to access
a C/C++ compiler, assembler, linker/locator utility, integrated debugger,
librarian, and editor. Enhancements to the Editor include Visual Assist,
which helps automate the process of code writing; and Paradigm C++ Lint,
which provides syntax checking of source files in the Project Manager.
Reliable Software has released its Code Co-op 3.2 version control system.
It supports LAN and e-mail-based collaboration, providing the ability
to develop anytime and anywhere without requiring a central server. Code
Co-op 3.2 now handles e-mail collaboration better due to the addition
of file compression and the splitting of large scripts into multiple e-mail
messages. Other enhancements include the ability to open a file using
